AKG P420 Studio Vocal Recording Kit

A versatile microphone solution
With its multiple polar patterns for highly versatile sound capture, immense SPL handling, and low self-noise, the black AKG P420 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone is primed to deliver crisp, distortion-free sound and three-mics-in-one functionality, whether you record vocals at home or blaring guitar mics and explosive drums on stage. This side-address microphone features a rugged all-metal body that not only increases durability but also helps reject RF interference from sources such as wireless systems. It comes with a spider shock mount to isolate the microphone from vibration noise and a metal case for safe transportation.

The P420's true condenser capsule utilizes dual 1" gold-plated diaphragms tuned to produce detailed sound with a smooth boost in high frequencies for increased clarity. Additionally, it is capable of handling SPLs of up to 155 dB (-20 pad on) with no audible distortion, so you'll have no trouble playing drums and guitar amps. A 300 Hz low-cut filter can be activated to help reduce booming noise, wind noise, or even bass build-up on nearby microphones. Thanks to its cardioid, figure-8, and omnidirectional polar patterns, the P420 is just as capable in front of a rapper producing tracks in a room as it is surrounded by a set in a studio. Use a separately available XLR cable to connect the P420 to an input. XLR microphone that can provide 48V phantom power.

Three polar patterns
This side-address microphone offers three polar patterns for optimal sound in a wide variety of applications. Each of the P420's selectable polar patterns is virtually frequency independent, so reflected sound will be reproduced accurately and without color.

  • Cardioid (center setting): This is a standard setting for recording and provides excellent results on all types of voices and a wide variety of instruments. Remember to point the front of the microphone towards the sound source, as it is more sensitive to sounds coming from the front and picks up much less sounds coming from the sides or behind.
  • Figure 8 (left configuration): The microphone will capture sounds coming from the front and back with equal sensitivity. Use this mode to mike the side signal in M/S stereo recording or to record two sound sources (announcers, instruments) face to face. It is also a good choice for overhead miking of cymbals.
  • Omnidirectional (right-hand setting): This is the preferred setting for "all-mic" recording, high-quality ambient mic (audience sound), or far-field recording in large or small recording rooms with exceptionally good sound, etc. .
Large gold-plated dual diaphragms
The P420 features a true condenser capsule design with two diaphragms to allow selection of different polar responses. Its large 1" diaphragm construction is made from a plastic sheet coated with gold on one side only to prevent short circuiting of the rear electrode, even at extremely high sound pressure levels.

All metal body
The all-metal body contributes to the rejection of RF interference, so you can use the microphone near transmitting stations and in conjunction with wireless microphones or other communications equipment. The extremely robust and heavy body and robust front grille protect the microphone from damage caused by rough handling on stage.

High headroom and minimal distortion
Capable of handling sound pressure levels of up to 155 dB without introducing noticeable distortion and built to withstand high temperatures and humidity, the microphone will provide excellent results in a wide range of applications.

Low cut filter
The low cut switch on the back of the microphone further reduces bass distortion caused by footsteps, wind noise and air conditioning noise. The filter also minimizes the proximity effect that close miking of less than 4" causes in any unidirectional microphone. The filter fades at 12 dB/octave from 300 Hz downwards.

Switchable pad
The pad selector on the back of the microphone allows you to increase headroom by 20 dB for distortion-free up-close recording. The pre-attenuation pad prevents the microphone output level, especially at low frequencies, from overloading the miniature transformers used in many mixer input stages, etc.

Connecting to audio equipment
The P420 uses a condenser transducer designed for 48V phantom power from a source such as an external microphone preamp, audio interface, or mixing console. It provides a balanced output on a 3-pin XLR male connector; use an XLR cable (available separately) to connect the microphone to a balanced XLR input with phantom power.

Shock mount and metal case
Included with the P420 are a spider shock mount and a metal carrying case. The shock mount absorbs vibrations, which helps isolate the microphone from stand handling noise and foot noise.

Auray RF-CM-S Reflection Filter (Silver)

Auray 's silver RF-CM-S reflection filter is the perfect solution for recording vocalists or voice actors in less than stellar acoustic spaces where the room's reflection would be recorded along with the vocal, making post-processing and mixing more complicated. This could be in a home studio, an untreated rehearsal space, or an impromptu movie dialogue replacement situation.

Housed in a deep, sturdy, semi-circular perforated aluminum housing, the high-density acoustic foam provides a reflection-free environment for the microphone while attenuating any ambient noise. The resulting sharper, drier recordings can then be handled during film mixing or post-processing, without extraneous noise or unwanted reflections getting in the way.

The filter mounts to a microphone stand, and front and rear sliding brackets allow you to easily adjust its height and depth for precise microphone placement. Adapters with standard 5/8"-27 threads fit most microphone stands, clips and shock mounts.

Compact solution to provide acoustic isolation for recording voice or narration in untreated spaces

High-density foam absorbs acoustic reflections and minimizes room ambiance by isolating the microphone

Perforated aluminum shield diffuses and prevents sound from being reflected back to the microphone, especially when recording loud vocalists

The sliding bracket makes it easy to mount the microphone in the ideal position within the reflection filter

Adjustable rear stand provides additional filter height adjustment to accommodate different heights of vocalists

Adapters with industry-standard 5/8"-27 threaded pins and sockets are compatible with microphone stands, shock mounts, and 5/8"-27 post microphone clips.

Deep, semicircular design ensures dry vocals while attenuating external noise

Auray RFMS-580 Microphone and Tripod Stand with Reflection Filter

The Auray RFMS -580 Microphone Tripod and Bounce Filter Stand features heavy-duty steel construction and is capable of providing sturdy support for your bounce filter and studio microphone at the same time. The tripod design features folding legs for convenient storage, a telescoping center column that can be adjusted to reach a maximum working height of 68".

The stand also features non-slip feet for added traction on hard surfaces, as well as a 5/8" thread adapter for attaching a shock mount or microphone clip.

Provides robust support for a microphone and a reflection filter at the same time
Can also be used as a speaker stand (may require 3/8" thread adapter)
