In the modern era of digital recorders, DAWs and software plug-ins, Mike-E is the ultimate solution for getting a clean, strong, yet warm and musical signal in the box... and it couldn't be easier to work with - your front The panel layout is so simple that even inexperienced engineers will have no problem moving it around right away.

When the engineering team at Empirical Labs sets out to build a microphone preamp, you can be assured that it will deliver spectacular sound, be easy to work with, and provide features unlike any other device in its class. To that end, we proudly present the Mike-E, a high-performance transformer-coupled microphone preamplifier with a noise level far below that of any microphone, combined with a unique compressor/saturator circuit that delivers knee-jerk compression. classic as well as a versatile tonal 'coloring' that can replicate many of the best features of vintage analogue recording equipment.

Microphone preamplifier

The Mike-E features a super low noise transformer input amplifier section with gain under precise digital control. The signal-to-noise ratio far exceeds any existing microphone. Having used many mic preamps over the years, we have implemented a unique stepped gain control that should be immune to the normal instability that age causes in potentiometers and hold-down switches. A bad one!" LED indicates when the input signal is overloading the circuit.

CompSat™

CompSat's unique circuitry sets the Mike-E apart from all other microphone preamps.

SATURATOR – a multi-stage soft-clipping circuit. At lower levels, a triode-like saturation affects the signal. As the level increases, a second unique clip circuit begins to flatten the peaks more severely.

COMPRESSOR – based on ELI's world famous Distressor, but with other features (including a much longer attack time). Preset aspect ratios include: 2:1, 4:1, 8:1… and of course Nuke.

EMPHASIS – a two-stage circuit that smoothly boosts and cuts high frequencies before the CompSat™ circuit and then cuts frequencies after it. Emphasis has the added advantage of improving signal over noise and is the reason why analog tape decks used emphasis to begin with.

Specifications

  • Frequency response – 3 Hz to 200 kHz enabled (without CompSat). CompSat is 3Hz – 150Khz. Optional transformer output is 6 Hz to 80 kHz.
