HARRISON CONSOLES | 32C CHANNEL

O 32C Channel combines 3 of the most renowned processing elements in Harrison - O 32C EQ , the 32C filters and the channel compressor Mixbus – in a single plug-in with adjustable signal flow.

The new 32C Channel plugin Harrison cross-shaped brings Harrison's True Analog sound to your digital audio workstation in your studio... and will change the way you think about mixing "in the box."

Supplied in all major workstation formats: AAX (ProTools), AudioUnit (Logic), VST3 (Cubase/Nuendo), and VST for almost all hosts.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS
  • 32C Equalizer: A 4-band equalizer modeled after the 32C channel strip EQ.
  • 32C Filters: A pair of highpass and lowpass filters with an optional “bump” feature to add extra low-frequency punch.
  • Compressor: A multipurpose dynamic processor with 3 selectable modes that allow it to operate as a compressor, leveler or limiter.

32C EQUALIZER

In 1975, Dave Harrison released the 32Series console. For nearly a decade, the 32Series remained the console of choice for building new studios around the world.

Previous to the modern parametric equalizer, the 32Series equalizer had to serve many purposes and remain easy to use. The 2 middle bands use a proportional-Q design: small gain changes provide smooth classic-style tone controls; but cut a little harder and the filters become sharper, allowing you to discover and then eliminate problematic frequencies. The high and low bands have a shelf design with a wide gain range, allowing you to add dramatic sparkle and sparkle to any source. If you need more surgical work, however, you can switch the high and low bands to operate as additional proportional Q 'bell' filters. The effort made to give voice to this eq was unparalleled at the time, and his signature remains on some of the greatest records ever made.

The 32C Channel Plugin provides a complex emulation of the original Harrison 32C EQ . Every resistor, capacitor and transistor is included in the model. When combined with the filter section 32C , a wide variety of tonal possibilities are available with just a few knob turns.

MIXBUS CHANNELSTRIP COMPRESSOR

A channel strip plugin isn't complete without a great compressor. The story of the 32C Channel compressor begins in 2009, when Harrison developed the Mixbus workstation.

Harrison has a unique history with digitally controlled analog consoles, which allows us to compile the settings that are most frequently used on our large format consoles. To match the flexibility and ease of the 32C EQ, Harrison delved into our records to see which settings would be most appropriate for a general-purpose channel compressor. We found 3 'types' of settings favored by our users:

  • a 'compressor' mode with an adjustable ratio, moderate attack and program-dependent automatic release: for general-purpose guitar, keyboard and general mix compression
  • a 'leveler' mode with an adjustable attack, a quick release and a very smooth ratio: for “always on” vocal compression
  • a 'limiter' mode with adjustable release time, instant attack, aggressive ratio, and a multi-stage release + hold envelope for drums and other percussion sources

By simplifying the compressor into these 3 modes, the compressor Mixbus helps you recreate these unique compression effects with minimal effort.

32C FILTERS

Series 32 consoles provided a pair of steep highpass and lowpass filters to accommodate sources with low noise or hiss.

These unique filters took advantage of newly developed 'dual register' potentiometers to cover an extraordinarily wide sweep range: so wide that you could effectively overlap the filters until the passband was eliminated. Mixing engineers like Bruce Swedien used this feature to pack more instruments into a mix without interfering with each other, and credited the 32C filters as a critical part of their arsenal.

The “ bump ” button recreates the slight resonance of the original filter, resulting in an extra bass punch just above the filter's cutoff frequency. Use the 'bump' button to retain the presence of a vocal while filtering out unwanted noise picked up by the microphone.

MASTER INPUT AND OUTPUT

The Master input and output section provides level controls at the beginning and end of the signal chain, as well as a polarity switch.

Combined with the Routing section, below, the 32C channel plug-in provides a multitude of ways to stage your signal.

The final output meter provides a visual reference of the output level of your track. The meter's ballistic movement is carefully tuned so you can match the level of your bass, kick drum, and lead vocal for an explosive pop mix.

AUTOMATABLE ROUTING

The routing section provides an automated routing order of the Filters, EQ, and Compressor stages.

Each stage has an Audition ('Ear') button for soloing an individual stage. And the routing section also provides an Audition button for each point in the signal flow, between each element. This allows you to hear the effect of one, two, or all three elements in their assigned order.

This was a game-changing feature for our post and film users, and is now available in the 32C Channel for music mixing!
