The Manley Nu Mu Stereo Limiter Compressor uses the special T-Bar tube mod front end of the legendary Variable Mu® with the same super-smooth side chain and timing characteristics followed by a discrete solid-state amplification and output stage and FET. high voltage for faster output stage. and more powerful audio path. It's like a “clean” version of Variable Mu, especially suited to modern digital and electronic music, where you don't necessarily need to colorize or mask the sound like we did in the early days of digital.

Featuring Manley's new HIP function, the Manley Nu Mu enhances dynamic control to bring out lower-level detail without taking the life out of exciting transients. Cleverly engineered to build efficiently and aesthetically engineered to earn rapturous praise from its customers, both visually and ergonomically, the Manley Nu Mu innovates in performance and value, all proudly hand-built in California, of course!

NOTES FROM EVEANNA MANLEY:

"So: taking the smoother and better version of the Variable Mu - the T-BAR mod where we use two 6BA6 Pentodes tied together as triodes to get almost identical characteristics to the revered 6386 tubes of the original (or Fairchild) version - we have the same front- end than the Variable Mu. From there we move on to discrete high voltage transistor and FET amplification and no chips. So, yes, this is cheaper than the all-valve Variable Mu; at the outputs, practically the clean version of Variable Mu.

"Let's think back to the early 1990s when Variable Mu came out. Recording was a different world. There was still a lot of tape recording going on in the big studios. And then digital wasn't really great yet. It had a flat sound and a little "glary". A big, round, vibrant sound like The Variable Mu was exactly what was needed at the time. So, we don't have really great digital converters, and of course it's our de facto standard now. We need that big masking sound for everything we do today, especially for electronic/EDM music where we want to keep sounds super crisp and punchy. We don't want to add more vibration or slow down the sound. So a clean, solid-state limiter compressor. Fast and powerful is what the world needs right now. And here's what we have with the Manley Nu Mu - and for all our individual musicians and home recording customers, it's priced very well for them.

NU MU vs. MU VARIABLE STEREO (with T-BAR)

As you can see in this graph generated by our Audio Precision measurement system, both the LIMIT and COMPRESS reduction curves of the NU MU are remarkably similar to those of a T-Bar modified Stereo Variable Mu. The same curves, the same legendary smoothness.

1. OUTPUT CONTROL. The OUTPUT control is available on the L and R channels. Adjusts the output level of that audio channel. Unity gain is near the ninth mark, or 11 o'clock.

2. LIMIT CONTROL. The THRESHOLD control is available on the L and R channels. THRESHOLD or gain reduction sets the amplitude required for compression or limiting to take effect. The most extreme effect occurs when the control knob is set to MIN or fully counterclockwise.

3. COMPRESSION/LIMIT SWITCH. This switch allows the Nu Mu to use two different compression ratios, offering compression at approximately 3:1 when the switch is on and illuminated, or limiting at a ratio of approximately 10:1.

4. INPUT/BYPASS SWITCH. The BYPASS switch on the Nu Mu is a 'Hardwire' bypass for maximum performance. If the switch is turned on and illuminated in the “IN” position, the audio will pass through the Limiter or Compressor, so all front panel controls will work. Use this option to check that limiting or compression is not disturbing the original sound, but improving it or at least leveling the volume.

5. VU METER. Large custom VU meters allow for easy tracking of both channels with the Nu Mu. Shows the amount of gain reduction in dB from the 0 dB mark, when the switch (7) is in the REDUCTION position. When this switch is selected to O/P and lit, the meter measures output in decibels.

6. HIP CONTROL. The "Hip" control allows compression to happen at lower volumes (lower in the dynamic range spectrum), but leaves the loudest dynamics aside while still compressing the overall signal. You get smoother louder sections and original dynamics from the louder sections. Previously, the only way around this problem was parallel compression, where the compressed signal was mixed with the uncompressed signal. Our "Hip" control achieves a similar effect while being easier to use, requiring less hardware (no extra external mixing required).

7. METER SELECTION SWITCH. The meter selection switch allows the user to monitor gain reduction or unit output. When the switch is turned on and illuminated, the output of the specific channel you are monitoring is visible on the corresponding VU meter.

8. ATTACK CONTROL. The ATTACK control determines how long it takes the compressor to respond to signals above the threshold. The Attack control is continuously variable and determines the duration of a transient required to initiate gain reduction.
With 63% gain reduction: SLOW 0.13s, MID 0.07s, FAST 0.013s.
With 90% gain reduction: SLOW 0.64s, MID 0.35s, FAST 0.064s.

Fully counterclockwise on the slowest setting will prevent most percussive signals from causing limiting or compression. It is available on both left and right channels.

9. RECOVERY CONTROL. The RECOVERY control determines how long the compressor takes to recover after the signal drops below the threshold level.
With 63% gain reduction recovery, five selections: 0.1s, 0.16, 0.32, 0.64s, 1.7s.
With 90% gain reduction recovery, five selections: 0.227s, 0.368s, 0.736s, 1.6s, 3.87s.

10. LINK FUNCTION. When the LINK function is used, it connects the two stereo channels. The left channel controls become the master by turning on THRESHOLD, ATTACK and RECOVERY CONTROLS.

11. INPUT LEVEL SWITCH. The input level is controlled by a toggle switch. There is an input level control for each channel. Three attenuation levels are available. +3dB, 0dB and -3dB.

12. HP SC SWITCH. The High Pass Side Chain filter is factory set to 100 Hz. When this switch is turned on and illuminated, everything above 100 Hz will have the effect of limiting or compressing. Useful if you want the bass to have full impact and limit or compress everything else.

13. POWER SWITCH. The power switch glows soft blue when an IEC power cord is connected to the unit. This indicates that the Nu Mu is in STANDBY mode. Activating the power button takes the Nu Mu out of standby mode and into heating mode. The power button will light up a brighter blue and the backlit VU meters will begin to flash. This warm-up process lasts 30 seconds, after which the MUTE relays will lift and the VU meters will stop flashing.
